Nawakwi Family Commends President Hichilema, Government for Support and Compassion

The family of the late Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president has expressed deep appreciation to President Hakainde Hichilema and the Zambian government for the support rendered to the late opposition leader during her illness and following her passing. The tribute was made during a solemn and emotional funeral service held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, which brought together leaders from across the political spectrum.

Family spokesperson Dr. Clement Mugala, speaking on behalf of the bereaved family, highlighted the critical role President Hichilema and his government played in providing both moral and practical support during the late politician’s final days. He noted that the government had not only settled her medical bills at Coptic Hospital but had also facilitated her medical evacuation to South Africa under the directive of the Head of State.

“She told me when she comes back from South Africa she would personally thank HH for his support,” Dr. Mugala said, drawing emotional reactions from mourners.

Dr. Mugala emphasized that this act of compassion had left a lasting impression on the late FDD leader, who recognized and valued the gesture from the President despite their differing political affiliations. He further thanked President Hichilema for taking time to attend the funeral in person, describing his presence as a significant and unifying gesture that brought comfort to the family and the FDD fraternity.

The funeral drew several high-profile figures, including opposition leaders, reflecting a rare moment of unity and mutual respect within the nation’s political space. Among the dignitaries in attendance were FDD Vice President Chifumu Banda and National Christian Party (NCP) President Peter Chanda. In his tribute, Chifumu Banda praised the late leader for her tireless service and fearless spirit, noting that her passing was not only a loss to the FDD but to the country as a whole.

“The late president dedicated her life to championing the causes of the ordinary people. She was principled, passionate, and determined to see a better Zambia,” Banda said.

The atmosphere at the Cathedral was filled with solemnity, but also a spirit of unity and shared mourning. President Hichilema’s presence and the government’s earlier interventions were seen as gestures that transcended political boundaries, affirming the shared humanity that binds all Zambians in times of sorrow.

The service not only honored the life and contributions of the late opposition figure but also served as a reminder of the power of empathy, even in a political landscape often marked by division.
