Defiant No More: Munir Zulu Jailed Again Over Seditious Remarks as Legal Troubles Mount

Former Lumezi Member of Parliament Munir Zulu, once a fierce political firebrand, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour on Friday by Lusaka Magistrate Trevor Kasanda for seditious conduct. The conviction relates to a social media post dated September 6, 2023, in which Zulu alleged that President Hakainde Hichilema was planning to dissolve Parliament and call early elections, claims prosecutors successfully argued were inflammatory and capable of destabilizing the nation.

This latest sentence adds to Zulu’s mounting legal woes, as he is already serving a jail term linked to earlier charges arising from his unsubstantiated corruption allegations against Infrastructure Minister Charles Milupi. That case, which drew national attention in early 2023, marked the beginning of Zulu’s downward spiral from populist provocateur to imprisoned lawmaker.

As the ruling was read in court, Zulu maintained his trademark composure, his defiance subdued but still visible. The judgment also carried a financial penalty of 2,000 Kwacha in penalty units, underscoring the severity with which the court viewed his actions.

Zulu’s political career has been marked by sharp accusations, controversy, and courtroom drama. In March 2023, he sent shockwaves through the political sphere when he accused Ministers Situmbeko Musokotwane and Charles Milupi of accepting a $250,000 bribe tied to a road contract. The accusations, made without evidence, earned swift backlash from government institutions and legal threats that ultimately led to his prosecution.

Further controversy followed in October 2023, when Zulu alleged that Water Development Minister Mike Mposha had physically assaulted him in Parliament. An internal inquiry by the Committee on Privileges found no merit to the claim and instead censured Zulu for unparliamentary behavior, branding him a disruptor rather than a whistleblower.

The controversies didn’t end there. In May 2024, he was arrested alongside civil rights activist Brebnar Changala on hate speech charges, another addition to a now-lengthy criminal record. In a dramatic twist, Zulu’s own lawyer, Mcqueen Zaza, walked away from representing him during trial proceedings in November, citing undisclosed professional reasons. This left Zulu legally exposed at a time he needed the strongest defense.

Now, with two active sentences hanging over him,one he is currently serving following the Milupi bribery saga, and the second handed down on today Friday,Zulu finds himself fully entangled in the consequences of his controversial political path. Zulu faces a bleak political and personal future. Yet public opinion remains split. To some, he is a victim of political persecution, punished for speaking uncomfortable truths. To others, his downfall is a self-inflicted collapse fueled by recklessness and a disregard for legal boundaries.

As Zambia moves toward the 2026 elections, Zulu’s saga stands as a striking reminder of the power and peril of political speech. The man who once dared the establishment to silence him is now confined behind prison walls, his loudest statement now perhaps the silence that follows.
