President Hichilema Welcomes Anglo American Corporation Back to Zambia

A Major Mining Milestone for Zambia

In a landmark move, Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema has welcomed the global mining giant, Anglo American Corporation, back to Zambia’s mining sector after a 20-year hiatus. This renewed investment, therefore, promises to revitalize Zambia’s copper production, create jobs, and advance the country’s position as a top copper producer in Africa and beyond.

This partnership, moreover, comes as Zambia aims to achieve a copper production target of three million tons per year. President Hichilema, following discussions with Anglo American CEO Duncan Wanblad, emphasized the significance of aligning with reputable international companies. Anglo American’s return, he said, reflects confidence in Zambia’s investment climate and vast mineral potential.

Creating a Stable Mining Environment

President Hichilema highlighted Zambia’s commitment to establishing a stable mining environment that benefits both investors and local communities. His administration, in fact, aims to transform mining into a driver of sustainable growth, backed by fair policies, job creation, and community development. Long-term partnerships with established mining firms, he added, are essential to Zambia’s economic strategy, which focuses on using natural resources to uplift local communities.

Zambia’s copper industry—the second-largest in Africa—is vital to the global supply chain. Copper, especially essential for renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles, positions Zambia as a key player in the green economy. By encouraging international investment and modernizing its mining policies, the government is taking proactive steps to meet this global demand.

Proactive Policies to Attract Investment

In collaboration with the Chamber of Mines, the government has introduced updated legal and regulatory frameworks to create a favorable environment for investment. This approach, therefore, balances investor needs with Zambia’s economic objectives, securing transparency, resource security, and sustainable profits that directly benefit citizens.

Anglo American’s return coincides with recent large copper reserve discoveries, including the Mingomba exploration project, expected to yield between 500,000 and 600,000 metric tons. This potential has also driven a national geological mapping initiative, which aims to identify mineral-rich areas across the country, attracting further investment and boosting exploration efforts. Through these measures, Zambia is positioning itself as a leading mineral producer and economic powerhouse.

Supporting Local Communities Through Mining

Beyond economic growth, President Hichilema’s mining vision also emphasizes social responsibility and local engagement. This vision aligns with global standards for responsible mining, focusing on environmental protection and corporate social responsibility.

Anglo American’s commitment to responsible, advanced mining could, in fact, set a new standard in Zambia for other international investors.  For Anglo American, access to one of the world’s richest copper belts further enhances its position in the African mining sector.

A New Era for Zambia’s Economy

This renewed partnership, ultimately, marks a new era for Zambia’s economy, one defined by high standards, investor security, and social progress. President Hichilema’s leadership, with Anglo American’s support, positions the country’s mining sector for future prosperity, job creation, and global recognition.

Transforming Mineral Wealth into Shared Prosperity

The President views Anglo American’s return as a catalyst for wider economic development. He envisions Zambia’s mineral wealth translating into real, lasting benefits for all citizens.  This collaboration with Anglo American signals a promising new chapter for Zambia one focused on growth, sustainability, and empowered communities.
