President Hichilema Returns from Egypt with Promising Partnerships and Lessons for Zambia
President Hakainde Hichilema has concluded a productive state visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt, where he held pivotal discussions with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to bolster economic cooperation and unlock new avenues for trade and investment between the two nations. The visit, marked by high-level engagements and the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding, underscored Zambia’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships that drive national development.
During the visit, President Hichilema and his Egyptian counterpart explored opportunities for collaboration in key sectors such as infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, and healthcare. Egypt’s remarkable progress in these areas served as a source of inspiration, with President Hichilema expressing keen interest in replicating similar successes in Zambia. The two leaders emphasized the importance of joint public-private initiatives to deepen economic ties and create mutually beneficial outcomes.
A highlight of the trip was President Hichilema’s tour of Egypt’s iconic historical sites, including the Great Pyramids of Giza a testament to Egypt’s rich cultural heritage and a global tourism magnet. Reflecting on the visit, President Hichilema noted the potential for Zambia to leverage its own cultural and natural assets to boost tourism and stimulate economic growth. “Egypt’s ability to preserve and monetize its heritage is a model we can learn from,” he remarked.
Another key stop was the Veterinary Serum and Vaccine Research Institute in Cairo, a century-old institution renowned for its advancements in veterinary vaccine production. With Zambia aiming to eradicate livestock diseases and enhance its agricultural exports, President Hichilema expressed optimism about partnering with Egyptian experts to improve vaccine research and disease prevention capabilities back home.
“This visit has been highly fruitful,” President Hichilema stated. “Zambians can expect tangible progress in agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, and energy as a result of these engagements.” He also commended the over 40 Zambian companies that participated in the Egypt-Zambia Business Forum, which opened doors for new trade and investment opportunities.
The President was particularly impressed by Egypt’s ambitious infrastructure projects, including the construction of a new Administrative Capital in Cairo. Inspired by the scale and efficiency of these developments, he reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to pursuing similar large-scale projects through strategic partnerships.
As the delegation departed Egypt, President Hichilema extended his gratitude to President el-Sisi for the warm hospitality and to Zambians for their unwavering support. He urged citizens to remain steadfast in backing initiatives that drive national development and economic growth.
This visit not only strengthened bilateral relations but also provided Zambia with valuable insights and partnerships to accelerate its development agenda. With lessons learned and new opportunities on the horizon, the future looks promising for Zambia under President Hichilema’s leadership.
