The Movement for Democratic Congress (MDC) has called on former President Edgar Lungu to support the leadership of Republican President Hakainde Hichilema in fostering peace and national unity in Zambia.
Speaking in Chirundu, MDC District Chairperson Humphrey Kawayawaya emphasized the need for Mr. Lungu, as the country’s only surviving former Head of State, to retire from active politics following the recent Constitutional Court ruling that settled his eligibility case.
The court’s decision on December 10, 2024, confirmed that Mr. Lungu is ineligible to contest future presidential elections, having served the constitutional two-term limit. This development, Mr. Kawayawaya suggested, provides an opportunity for Mr. Lungu to pivot from politics to statesmanship.
“Former President Lungu should consider working closely with his successor, President Hichilema, in addressing Zambia’s challenges. By doing so, he can truly attain the status of a statesman,” Kawayawaya stated.
The MDC official further urged Mr. Lungu to use his newfound freedom to mentor young Zambians, helping them overcome personal setbacks and contribute positively to the country. “This is a chance for Mr. Lungu to leave a lasting legacy by guiding the next generation of leaders and fostering unity among Zambians,” he added.
Mr. Kawayawaya also highlighted the importance of collective effort as Zambia approaches 2025, a year he described as pivotal for addressing societal challenges. He stressed that unity of purpose and wisdom from all Zambians of goodwill will be crucial for national progress.
Currently, Mr. Lungu leads one of three Patriotic Front (PF) factions, with Mafinga Member of Parliament Robert Chabinga and Matero MP Miles Sampa heading the other two. Mr. Kawayawaya suggested that stepping away from factional leadership could enable Mr. Lungu to play a more impactful role in uniting the nation.
The MDC’s call echoes sentiments from various stakeholders who have urged former presidents to prioritize peacebuilding and mentorship, reinforcing Zambia’s democratic values and national cohesion.
