Expert Urges Government to Address Mining Sector Challenges for 2030 Productivity Goals

Mining expert Edward Simukonda has called on the government to address critical challenges in Zambia’s mining sector to achieve the projected increase in productivity by 2030. He warns that the ambitious goal will remain out of reach unless significant reforms and strategic investments are undertaken.

Mr. Simukonda identified streamlining regulatory processes and implementing a more effective tax system as essential steps toward fostering growth and attracting investment in the sector. “The complexity and inefficiencies in the current regulatory framework hinder progress. Simplifying these processes will create a more conducive environment for both local and foreign investors,” he stated.

Improving Mining Sector Efficiency

Zambia’s mining sector remains a significant contributor to the country’s economy, particularly through its production of copper, which accounts for a substantial portion of the GDP. However, persistent issues such as policy inconsistency, high taxation, and operational inefficiencies have stymied the sector’s full potential.

Mr. Simukonda emphasized the need for a balanced tax regime that promotes productivity while ensuring fair revenue generation for the government. “An effective tax system that doesn’t overburden mining companies is crucial for encouraging reinvestment and driving long-term growth,” he noted.

Diversifying the Economy

While acknowledging the mining sector’s importance, Mr. Simukonda stressed the need for Zambia to reduce its dependence on copper. He pointed out that over-reliance on a single commodity exposes the economy to global market volatility, which can have devastating effects on national revenue and economic stability.

“Diversifying the economy is not just a strategic goal but a necessity. We must explore and invest in other sectors, including agriculture, renewable energy, and manufacturing, to build a more resilient economic foundation,” he said.

Investing in Energy Infrastructure

Energy challenges in Zambia, including power shortages and load shedding, have significantly impacted the mining sector’s productivity. Mr. Simukonda highlighted the urgent need for mining companies to contribute to the development of energy infrastructure. He suggested increased investment in renewable energy projects and partnerships between the private and public sectors as potential solutions to alleviate the energy deficit.

“The mining industry must take an active role in addressing Zambia’s energy challenges. By investing in energy generation and distribution, the sector can ensure uninterrupted operations and support the broader economy,” he stated.

Aligning Mining Goals with National Development

Mr. Simukonda’s recommendations come at a pivotal time as Zambia strives to align its mining sector’s growth with the nation’s development goals. He underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and industry stakeholders to create policies and strategies that promote sustainable mining practices while driving economic progress.

“The journey to achieving the 2030 productivity goals requires a unified effort. Stakeholders must work together to address the challenges and capitalize on opportunities within the sector,” he concluded.

Toward a Sustainable Future

As Zambia aims for increased productivity and economic diversification, addressing inefficiencies in the mining sector and investing in energy infrastructure will be crucial. Mr. Simukonda’s insights serve as a roadmap for tackling the structural and operational challenges hindering progress, ensuring the sector remains a cornerstone of Zambia’s economic growth.

With decisive action, the mining sector could not only meet the 2030 targets but also contribute significantly to a diversified and sustainable economic future for Zambia.
